A/N: Okay, sorry it took me a while. Had a big project and stuff, but here it is ;]
And I can't come up with a good title... Help me 8D
Students flooded out of the classroom as the bell rang, ending the day. School and its lessons flew right out of their minds as plans for some fun began to invade... It was the weekend after all; time to party and kick it with friends.
The usual group of eight exited behind the other students, arranging their own plans. Maka wrapped a strong arm around her pink-haired buddy, as Soul drifted over to the others: Black Star, Liz, Patti, and Tsubaki. "So, do you have to do anything today?" Smiling, the girl gave Chrona a small wink. "You know, you can hang out with me and Soul if you want."
"Uh, thank you, Maka..."
"We normally just sit around watching tv or something, but if you're with us, we can go to the movies..?" She trailed off, waiting for a possible suggestion from Chrona.
"Oh, well I..."
"Chrona." The timid girl looked up suddenly.
"Ah, Professor Stein," Maka noted, staring at his concerned expression. "Is something wrong?" She absently glanced to Chrona, who was shuffling her feet.
"Maka, I'd like to speak to Chrona alone, if you don't mind," he took a huff of his cigarette, and blew the smoke away from the girls. "Don't worry, she's not in trouble." A hidden meaning was laced in his words. He peered back down at Maka sternly.
"Alright..." Maka removed her arm, and shifted her gaze back to the group ahead of them. "Well, when you're done talking, you know where we'll be. Okay, Chrona?" Giving her a nod to know she was fine, Chrona smiled as she watched Maka rejoin her friends. They were quite absorbed in whatever Black Star and Patti were arguing about now.
Stein sighed, and loomed over Chrona. A deep mixture of frustration and worry was shown within his tired eyes. "I'm sure you know what this is about."
"U-Uh, I think s-so..." The girl stammered, the smile wiped clean off. "I know I haven't been doing well in this class..."
The scientist smirked, and cocked his head to the side. "Exactly. And do you know what happens if you fail this class?" Those words lingered a moment, an obvious threat attached.
"Err, no..." She answered almost mutely.
"You'll have to repeat this year, Chrona," Stein exhaled more smoke, stuffing his right hand in his coat pocket. "You won't be able to be with any of your friends... Especially Maka." Noticing her sullen expression, he gave her an apologetic grin.
"It doesn't have to be that way though," he continued quickly. "If you just study more, or put in a little more effort..."
"I... I'm not that good at remembering all that soul stuff though..." Chrona spoke softly. Trying to remember all those different facts in Shibusen, it was too difficult. Her mind had already been stuffed with false truths from Medusa; there wasn't much room for anything else.
There was a silent pause, as the two meisters stood in the empty hallway. Stein suddenly broke the silence. "How about ...you have a study session with Maka?" It was a pretty good idea; the girl was a real bookworm, and she was Chrona's closest friend.
"No..." Shaking her head slowly, Chrona glanced down at the floor. There were rather pretty swirls in the tiles. She never noticed that before.
"Hm? Why not? I'm sure Maka would love to..."
"Uh, it's not that. It's just... I don't want to bug her and Soul..." She let her voice falter, and began identifying strange pictures in the swirly designs decorating the floor.
Stein chuckled, and breathed in another puff of smoke. "I see, I see. So it's like that huh?" He chuckled again at Chrona's confused face. "...Well, why don't you head on down to the library? I'm sure you can get some studying done." The amused look on his face slightly frightened her.
"B-But... I told you, I'm n-not that good at -"
"Nonsense," The professor shook his cigarette at her. "Head on down to the library. I'm sure you'll get something done. ~" He turned quickly, and gave a small wave before disappearing down the hall. His last comment stuck in her head; what could he mean by that?
Nonetheless, Chrona headed off to Shibusen's library. She'll stop by Maka and Soul's later. Right now, her grades were more important if she wanted to stay with her only true friends.
It wasn't long before she arrived in front of the doorway to the media center. She pushed the two towering double doors forward, before stepping mutely inside. The girl glanced nervously around. The room expanded beyond her sight, tall shelves aligned the walls with thousands of books. Chrona didn't even know where to start. Was Professor Stein even aware there were these many books?
Sighing to herself, Chrona wandered through the many shelves and cases of books, scanning the titles as she passed by. None seemed to stick out much, and only a few actually looked interesting. As her eyes floated glumly from one book to another, she found one that really caught her attention. Secrets of the Black Blood. Her hand reached for it, but hesitated. Did she really want to know what Medusa had lied about? Or maybe ...even told the truth about?
"Chrona?" The said meister jumped as a deep voice interrupted the silence.
"Ah, sorry," Chrona twisted her head around, meeting Kid's gaze as he appeared behind her. "I didn't mean to startle you."
"I-It's alright..." she managed to get out. "I was, um, j-just looking for s-some books..."
"Well, of course. We're in a library after all." Kid replied bluntly.
Chrona involuntarily shrunk down towards the bottom shelf; she tried to hide her flushed face in the shadows. Of course that's why she's here. What an embarrassing thing to say...
Regarding her reaction, Kid added briskly, "What are you looking for? Maybe I can help you..?"
Peering up from her knees, she considered that to be a friendly notion. "Okay... Um, I need to find some books to study for Professor Stein's class..." she mumbled, straightening herself again. "I'm sort of ...not doing so well..." She carefully met his eyes. Would he think she was stupid? He was a shinigami after all; he knew almost everything about souls, meisters, weapons, witches...
"I see," Kid placed the tip of his fist to his chin, pondering something for a moment. "Chrona, would you like me to assist you in studying?" He stared directly back at her.
"Err... Um, I, uh..." His strong, golden eyes pierced through her scared, powder blue ones. Words failed her at that moment.
"I'll take that as a yes," Kid mused, setting down a book he was carrying. He gently grasped her arm. "Here. Follow me. I know exactly what you need." The boy led Chrona around to the left side of the enormous archives, and set her down at one of the small wooden tables. "Stay put. I'll be right back."
As he vanished among the dark shelves again, Chrona was left to travel in her thoughts. Why did he want to study with her? She probably wouldn't get anything he said. Besides, he wouldn't even be studying, really. He'd just be helping her, which will be of no use to him. Perhaps she should just tell him that she'll be fine on her own... But then again, what did she know?
"Alright," Kid stated as he returned, placing a rather large pile of books on the table top. "What area are you having the most trouble in?" Flipping through a couple of the first books, he gave Chrona a small smile. "You can tell me. I won't judge you or anything."
She unexpectedly glanced up at him, as he continued to pull out books and arrange them in front of her. "...I, um, don't really get anything..." A bit frustrated with herself, she kept shifting in her seat, struggling with the right words. "It's just... I can't seem t-to..."
"I get it," Kid grinned, a bit arrogantly. "We have a lot to work on then, don't we?" He didn't just say her, he said them. Together. Chrona allowed a shy smile decorate her pale face.
"So, I want you to read this chapter and continue to this one..." Kid handed her a small book, pointing out what he wanted her to go over. "When you're done, just tell me. I'll ask you a few questions based on that section." He sat exactly across from her, of course, and picked up his own reading book.
Chrona started reading, and attempted to let the words stick in her head, but to no use. The girl was halfway through her assigned pages, when she brought the top of her book down a bit. She peeked from behind the pages at Kid, who had indulged himself in whatever literature he had chosen. He seemed so determined on finishing his book. Chrona wondered what he could be reading...
"Done?"
"...Huh?" She blinked up hazily at Kid's voice. The pink-haired meister hadn't realized he stopped reading his book quite a while ago.
"...You were staring over here..." Kid raised an eyebrow, only to soon raise the other one. "If you're done, just tell me."
"Oh, uh, no, I'm not..." Chrona hastily returned to gathering information from her book. She lost interest already though, and the words moved in a blur; the sentences jumbled up with each other. She blinked again confusedly as a slender hand slid across the page.
"You're not even reading, are you?" Kid confirmed, rather than asked, leaning across the table. He swiftly pulled the book out of Chrona's hands, and placed it back on the wooden surface. Closing his eyes, his brows furrowed in concentration.
"I-I'm sorry..." Chrona murmured, poking her shaking fingers together.
"It's not a problem," Kid assured her, his eyes still closed. "We'll just have to try a better method..." Opening his eyes again, he slid himself into a chair next to Chrona. "How about I repeat some of the main facts, and if you know them, fill in the blanks." Kid offered, facing the nervous meister.
"Alright..."
"Okay then. First one: a sound soul resides in a what?"
"A sound soul r-resides in a sound body and sound m-mind..." His never wavering stare made Chrona quite fidgety.
"Exactly. Next: by using their soul wavelengths, a meister and weapon can perform a...?"
"Soul resonance..." she stated, with more confidence.
"Mmhm," Kid smirked lightly. "You do get this, don't you?"
"W-Well, I guess so," Chrona said incredulously. "I guess when you put it into simple sentences, I understand it easier..." Straightening her shoulders a bit, she allowed herself a tiny victorious grin.
"That's true," Kid nodded beside her. "Perhaps, I can have you answer straight out questions then." This thought scared her a bit; filling in the blanks was much easier than a short answer. Catching her faltering confidence, Kid added, "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll get them right."
Chrona only gulped as Kid asked her the first question. "What are meisters?" He glanced expectantly at Chrona, propping an elbow on the table.
There was a long silence, but the girl finally replied, "They are the ones that are holding the weapons and are ...not weapons?" She tried, and that's what mattered.
"Heh, true, but there's a better definition," the shinigami chuckled. "They are the people with exceptional soul wavelengths, and they're paired with weapons." He smiled again, and placed a sly arm around her shoulders. "I'm sure you'll learn better, if..." Kid leaned in a little closer, staring intently into the blushing girl's eyes. "...We formed a reward system, right?" He paused, still holding her close.
Chrona found herself lost in those eyes mixed with gold and honey; she didn't realize he was actually talking to her.
"Chrona?"
"...huh?" She blinked herself out of her daze, and moved her head a little away from Kid. He seemed too close, yet, not close enough.
"I was saying," Kid continued. "That for every answer you get right, you shall get a reward. Doesn't that seem reasonable?" His body was still leaning close to her, his arm wound tight around her.
"Uh... S-Sure," her head seemed too clouded to remember any facts though.
"Then tell me, what is 'soul protect'?" Kid tilted his head towards hers, his eyes half lidded.
"Er, I, um, i-it's when a w-witch uses this spell t-thing to..." Chrona squeaked as Kid kept leaning into her.
"To...?" he repeated, shutting his eyes as the tip of his nose touched hers.
"T-To ...t-to, uh, hide her w-witch s-soul..." she finally choked out, squeezing her fists near her sides. The girl could barely breathe, her heart pounded dangerously against her chest.
"Correct," Kid exhaled, and in one swift motion, connected his lips with hers. It was only for a moment, but in that instant, they could both feel the jolt of electricity pulsing in their bodies. The energy and need that flowed through them, it only made them want more.
Kid pulled away, a surprised look adorned his face.
"W-What is it?" The black blooded meister shifted under his gaze. He was still holding onto her, so she couldn't run away and hide her flushed face.
"I'm sorry," he murmured, his face red as well. "I didn't realize how you might have felt..." Kid let his voice falter, and sat back in his chair, reluctantly letting go of Chrona.
"What...?" Did he think she was mad? It's not like she didn't like it…
"Maybe we should stop," he concluded, unconsciously raising his fingers to touch his warm lips. "You probably need to go home..."
"Wait," Chrona reached her hand out, as Kid stood up. When he peered back down at her, she couldn't find the right words. "I mean, you don't have to... Unless you want to... But, I, uh, it's okay... I didn't mind or anything..."
"Really?" Kid spoke incredulously.
"Y-Yes..." Chrona poked her two fingers together, settling on staring at the floor. "I kinda liked it, actually..." She froze, as a strong hand tilted her chin up.
"Well then, I think we should try that again."
"Huh...?" Kid pulled her up swiftly, and placed his hands gently on her thin waist. "K-Kid..?"
The said meister smirked, once again leaning closer. "We should practice this, to make sure it's a good enough reward for you later," he teased, pressing his lips to hers before she could even reply. Not that she minded.
A/N: Well, I kinda wanted to make this longer, but I didn't know how to continue. ^^;; Hehe, I hope you like it anyway, I tried my best to fit it to the prompt you gave me :3
